Jerusalem Street
(Aleje Jerozolimskie Street, Warsaw, Poland)
The animal that haunts me
has a skin of charred cement
and eyes of broken glass
I trace its spirit
in the crevices of hard flesh
and sharp edges
as I draw near
my own blood pulses
into the veins
of Jerusalem Street
through its artery
I drill a passage
towards the child
who blossomed here once
then died behind the ghetto wall
